About Galata Tower
Istanbul's Medieval Watchtower
There are taller buildings in Istanbul. There are newer observation platforms. But there is nothing quite like Galata Tower — a 14th-century Genoese stone watchtower rising 67 metres above the rooftops of Beyoğlu, offering views that have not fundamentally changed in seven centuries.
Built in 1348 by Genoese merchants who controlled the Galata district as a trading colony, the tower was originally called the Tower of Christ. It formed part of the Genoese city walls and served as the district's highest defensive point. When the Ottomans took Constantinople in 1453, the tower survived — one of the few Genoese structures to do so — and became part of the Ottoman city, serving as a fire watchtower, observatory, and navigational landmark over the following centuries.
The Views
From the 360° viewing gallery, you see Istanbul the way no map or photograph prepares you for — the city spreading in every direction, the Golden Horn cutting between the old city and Beyoğlu, the Bosphorus glittering beyond, the minarets of Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque punctuating the skyline, Topkapi Palace on its promontory overlooking the confluence of two seas.
On a clear day, you can see the Princes' Islands in the Sea of Marmara, the hills of the Asian shore, and both Bosphorus bridges. At sunset, the whole city turns gold.
The Legend of Hezarfen Ahmed Celebi
In the 1630s, a Turkish aviator named Hezarfen Ahmed Celebi reportedly launched himself from the top of Galata Tower with artificial wings and glided across the Bosphorus to the Asian shore at Üsküdar — a distance of approximately six kilometres. The story, recorded by Ottoman traveller Evliya Celebi, may be embellished, but it remains one of Istanbul's great legends.
